When I was a kid....maybe 13 years old I was living in Redondo Beach. My life was shit and I was new to this crap hole place. Thank God it was short lived.. The only real cool memory I have from them is seeing D.R.I. (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles) on MTV. The video for Beneath The Wheel was playing and it just simply hooked me. I was to hear more from them playing outside some bunk party a couple weeks later. Time continued and life got shittier.
My Mom died and I ended up out on Kauai. My Uncle gave me a 100 dollar bill and I bought 2 records that I remember. One was "How will I Laugh Tomorrow" by Suicidal Tendencies and the second was " Dealing With It" by DRI.

I was so gratified when I heard the first song Snap. It resonated with me so much that I could hardly stop listening to the album. In that first song I was struck with the opening lyrics...
"No, there are no easy answers
To sum up the problems which we face
History's a lesson, let us learn by our mistakes"
The album as a whole really impacted me. Also since I was on Kauai I was pretty much the only one that had it. I am surprised they even had the one to sell.
About a year later I was 14 with a job and really no place to spend any money. I did not surf so island life was starting to get difficult. As luck would have it I some how found out that DRI were going to play a show out on Oahu. Now I had to find a way to get out there. I had the money but I was only 14 and I didn't even consider bringing my Dad. Yet, I some how got the permission to go out there with a friend of mine. I had gotten him into DRI as well and he was excited to see them as too.

The show was at a small club. I couldn't remember the name of it to save my life. But it was pretty cool. The only thing is it had this support column right in the middle of where the pit was. More than one person met that pole the wrong way. Anyway, while we were waiting in line to get in the band came walking out. I immediately knew who they were. I thought it was pretty cool to see them walk out front to see the fans. Spike walked so close that he stepped on my friends foot. My friend not knowing who he was gave a little complaint, before realizing that it was the guitarist. This was getting really intense!
Once we got inside the club it was all anticipation. I was so excited as I had not been in a pit since I was in California and Kauai was not the place to have them. Here in this club it was electric and all I could do was pace back and forth. Finally the time came and they were being introduced. My friend was standing next to me and the second the first chord was struck I gave him a good shove and yelled welcome to the pit! I did not see him until the end of the night. The show was amazing and I will not forget it. Shit, that show was 2 fucking decades ago! They played loud and fast with so much energy the walls could hardly contain it. I moshed like I had never moshed before and even made it up on stage a couple of times. I have to say that DRI are some pretty fucking special guys and I am glad I got the chance to share some of that energy. If you get the chance to see them go! It will be the best fucking time ever!
